Applications:
UV-Curable Coatings, Inks, and Adhesives:
It is a vital component in "thiol-ene" reactions. When combined with acrylic or other olefinic monomers, it can be cured rapidly using UV light, creating a strong and durable polymer network. This is used for a variety of coatings, from flooring and furniture to electronics and optical displays.
Optical Materials:
Due to its high refractive index, it is used in the manufacturing of high-quality optical resins for lenses, including those for eyeglasses and cameras.
Sealants:
It provides fast curing and excellent adhesion properties, making it a valuable component in industrial sealants.
Nail polish:
key functional ingredient that enables the fast-curing, long-lasting, and durable properties that define modern gel nail polish
PETMP is a polythiol, meaning it contains multiple reactive thiol (-SH) groups. In gel nail polish, it is combined with monomers that have carbon-carbon double bonds, such as acrylates. When exposed to UV or LED light, a photoinitiator in the polish absorbs the light and starts a chemical reaction called "thiol-ene click chemistry."
The thiol-ene reaction is known for being very fast and efficient. This is what allows gel nail polish to cure in seconds under a UV/LED lamp. The reaction forms a highly cross-linked polymer network, which is the solid, durable coating you see on the nail.
Durability and Chip-Resistance: The dense, cross-linked structure created by PETMP gives the nail polish its hardness, shine, and resistance to chipping and scratching. This is a major reason why gel manicures last much longer than traditional air-dried polishes.
Improved Properties: Using PETMP can also lead to other benefits in the final product, such as good adhesion to the nail, low shrinkage during curing (which prevents lifting), and a high refractive index for a glossy finish.
Dental Materials: It is a precursor for synthesizing composites used in dental restorative materials.
