Ectoine is a natural, highly-soluble,small molecule, zwitterionic cyclic amino acid derivative, present in some species of extremophilic microorganisms. It is a compatible solute, which serves to stabilize the physiological properties of the cells and protect them from external osmotic stress, caused by high salinity, heat, loss of water and UV irradiation.
