What could El Niño mean for agricultural adjuvants?

When we talk about El Niño and agriculture, the discussion usually focuses on drought, excessive rainfall, crop yields, and commodity prices.


But there is another question worth asking:


What happens to crop protection when weather conditions change?


El Niño does not affect every agricultural region in the same way. Some areas may experience hotter and drier conditions, while others may face heavier rainfall.


For farmers, this means more than changing crop conditions.


It can also change the conditions under which crop protection products are applied.


And that matters.

High temperatures and low humidity can accelerate the evaporation of spray droplets after application.


This can affect spray deposition, leaf coverage, spreading and, depending on the product and crop, the uptake of active ingredients.


In other words, the performance of a pesticide is not determined only by its active ingredient. Application conditions matter too.


This is where adjuvants can play an important role.


Wetters and spreaders can help improve coverage and distribution on the leaf surface. Depending on the formulation and application conditions, other adjuvant technologies can also support retention, penetration or moisture management.


The objective is not simply to apply more product.


It is to make better use of every application.


 Too Much Rain: A Different Challenge 


On the other side of the weather spectrum, excessive rainfall creates a different problem.


A spray application may be well formulated, but rain shortly after application can reduce retention or wash deposits from the plant surface before the treatment has had sufficient time to perform.


This makes retention and rainfastness important considerations.


Adjuvants designed to improve sticking, deposition and retention can help address these challenges under appropriate conditions.

So we have an interesting contradiction:


Too little water can create spray application challenges. Too much water can create them too.


The Application Environment Is Changing


Weather does not only affect the spray itself.


Temperature, humidity and rainfall also influence crop growth, pest populations and disease pressure.


As these conditions change, farmers may need to adjust:

The first two questions are relatively obvious.


The third one is sometimes overlooked.


Yet the same crop protection product may perform differently depending on temperature, humidity, rainfall, water quality, nozzle selection and other application conditions.


This is why adjuvants are becoming an increasingly important part of the crop protection conversation.


Not because weather variability suddenly created a need for adjuvants.


But because it makes consistent spray performance more important.


From Ideal Conditions to Real-World Conditions


For years, discussions around agricultural formulations have often focused on efficacy under controlled or recommended application conditions.


But farmers rarely operate in a perfectly controlled environment.


They spray when the crop needs protection, when the weather allows it, and often within a narrow application window.


As weather becomes more variable, that window can become even more challenging.


This puts greater emphasis on technologies that can help crop protection products perform reliably under different field conditions.


And it may also accelerate interest in more sustainable formulation solutions.


Bio-based and biodegradable surfactants are one area worth watching as the agricultural industry continues to look for ways to balance performance, efficiency and environmental considerations.

The challenge, however, remains the same:


A more sustainable ingredient still needs to perform.

Looking Ahead

El Niño is only one example of how changing weather patterns can affect agriculture.


The bigger question is how the agricultural industry adapts when field conditions become less predictable.


For formulators, this may mean thinking beyond the active ingredient itself.


For farmers, it may mean paying more attention to application conditions and spray efficiency.


And for the adjuvant industry, it may mean developing solutions that help crop protection products perform more consistently in the real world.


Climate variability doesn't necessarily create a new need for adjuvants. It makes good spray performance even more important.
